How to Read a Journal Articles Critically?

Academic journal articles are articles or publications that contain research results and factual information, usually written by experts in their fields so that there are specific or in-depth data. In addition, this article aims to convey the results of the research and the author's response to a problem to the reader. This article has a structured nature making it easier for information to be found.


In reading an academic journal article, we need a skill in the form of critical reading so that we get information and knowledge in accordance with the author's delivery. Journal articles often have the following structure: Phenomenon, Theory, Hypothesis, Methods, Data / Result, Discussion, Conclution.

After knowing and clearly understanding the structure or parts contained in academic journal articles, it is necessary to know about strategies for reading in order to understand and understand the essence of the topic presented. Strategies in analyzing an academic journal article can be started from reading the title, background or biography, objectives, to whom this article is intended or the audience, thesis, evidence, notes, summarize, and finally evaluation.

In evaluating and analyzing a journal article, the basic model is in the form of questions that begin with "What?", "Where?", "Who ?," When? "Why?", "How?", "What if?", "So what? "," What next? ". The basic model can help us to hold on to one question and focus on finding answers to make it easier and faster to collect the data we want to find. In addition, we also do not go out or tilt from the purpose of reading.
